Backgrounds Complete & Music

  • July 22
    • I finished all backgrounds. Including variations, there is a total of 56 different background arts, with 27 unique pieces, and 29 variations for those already existing.
    • A majority of those variations are lumped into a little gimmick I'm setting up to add some flare to the main menu and took WAY too long to arrange/make/figure out. Math is hard.
    •  I started the Unity project and completed the main menu and a few variables in the Fungus flowchart.
    • I looked into some simple VFX to add to certain parts of the game to give it a little more "umph". So far, I'm considering adding snow, falling leaves, glowing effects, and cloud effects, among a few others. If I do implement these at all, they will not be added until well after the game's programming has been completed, so likely late in the development cycle, or not at all.

    • I started working on music pieces. Before 1 pm, I'd completed 4 tracks, each ranging from about 1-2 minutes, and split into different segments for different parts of the game. At this point, there are 5-8 music tracks left to complete for the different area's you visit in game. Most music tracks are heavily focused on a more "realistic" kind of sound, so real instruments. Piano's, guitars, etc. Some tracks will have more electronic/synth feel but this will be minimized, I truly enjoy music that is made with real instruments, and strive to keep this kind of thing in all of my music tracks/games.
    • I started gathering resources to make the ambience tracks. Based on my Trello list, there are about 27 ambience tracks that need to be completed. Luckily, these kinds of tracks can be easily looped with a 30 second - 1 minute segment, so these shouldn't take long for me to complete.
    • I'm also pondering how to integrate having different UI for different segments of the game, and am trying to determine if I truly want to sit down and make 6-8 themed UI with photoshop. I'm kind of glad I'm not doing too much graphic design right now after my 3 weeks of constant sprites/background art. But either way, at least 1 unique GUI needs to be made.
    •  I kept working on songs, and managed to complete two more and their variations/alts as each song has different layers to it and the full versions of each song are not fully experienced at one time.
    • Later this evening, I went through and completed all ambience and effect sounds. When I was finished, the total count came to be 33 sound effects and 23 different ambient tracks.

    • I did the voice lines for the side characters. I'm waiting on voice acting for 2 of my voice actors, the main actor included, but given his workload he can take aaaall the time he needs. I also did my folly work and creature sound effects.

    • I started on the rock puzzle graphics, this took until the afternoon, not because it was hard but because of the trip prep I needed to do, so I was going back and forth between working on the graphics and packing haha.
    • I also realized I hadn't exported all the sprites with their expressions/states, so this took about 2 hours to do with all of Danny's FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.
    • My lovely voice actor for the single line part, Chris, gave me 5 different takes on his one line and I love them! He delivered the line perfectly multiple times and I had a hard time choosing which I liked better! He told me it was his first time doing any voice acting work and delivered exceptional quality, quantity, and was punctual! I hope he succeeds in his future endeavors as a voice actor if he continues to pursue it!

    • I imported and arranged/sized all sprites and backgrounds in the unity project in a way that, for the time being, would make the most sense and be generally the most appealing to look at.
    • In the afternoon, I started working harder with Unity and Fungus to start putting everything together. Of course this was done chronologically with the story of the game so I did some final tweaks on the menu and then started actually programming! Exciting!
    • I think I could safely say I have just under half the games required lines as of the time of righting this. Danny's voice actor is sending them to me in groups. I'm so thankful to have him he's putting so much work into this!
    • I got about a third of the way through programming before I had to stop to do trip preparations.

Right now it's the evening of July 26. I don't think I'll have much more time to do any work on the game so for now, everything has been saved and backed up and I'll be spending the majority of tomorrow doing trip stuff. If I do manage to get any other work done tomorrow (during work of course because what they don't know don't hurt 'em), I'll make note of it for the next devlog. Then I leave Wednesday morning.

This is it for now! See you all in a few days!
